In Memory of Thomas Henry Verhelst

A life wonderfully lived deserves to be meaningfully remembered. Thomas Henry Verhelst of Clitherall (West Battle Lake), passed away Monday, October 24, 2022 at the age of 65. After bravely fighting and conquering thyroid cancer, he was unable to withstand the effects of treatments. He passed at home with his loving wife Karen Ruth Zell-Verhelst by his side.

Thomas Henry Verhelst was born December 27, 1956 to Lucian and Irene (Lootens) Verhelst, in Marshall, MN. Tom’s honesty, dedication, and drive led to 46 successful years as a real estate agent and broker. Tom generously shared his time with his church and community. Leisure time found Tom outdoors, on the lake, water and snow skiing, bike riding, traveling, hunting and splitting wood, or indoors playing cards. But Tom’s love and life were most complete with his wife, Karen, daughters, Nicole and Jessie, and their spouses, Wes and Gabe. His absolute pride and delight was being “Papa T.” to grandsons, Finn and Jack. He is also remembered by his mother, siblings, cousins, nieces and nephews, and many friends in the community. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials are made to the Fergus Falls Habitat for Humanity or donor’s choice.

Tom was a vital part of our community and will be greatly missed.
