Ottertail Schools

The community of Ottertail is in the Perham-Dent Public School District, which serves an average of 1,800 students each academic year through a challenging academic program, opportunities for both team and individual athletics, and a wide array of fine arts activities. There is an approximate 16-minute commute from Ottertail to the school campuses. Construction is underway for a new high school and on-site career tech center, with a projected completion date of July 2018.

Perham High School provides access to college courses as well as courses in the industrial trades, serving children from grades 9-12. Grades 5 through 8 attend Prairie Wind Middle School, and Pre-K through 4th grade attend Heart of the Lakes Elementary. The district also offers a preschool for ages 3 to 6 years old, and the Perham Area Learning Center, which offers alternative education for students in middle school and high school.

With hundreds of lakes surrounding the Ottertail area, there is no shortage of events providing a year-round connection with the natural beauty of West Central Minnesota. Activities range from summer concerts in the park, golf, and boating activities, to a variety of annual winter festivals at lakes and parks across the county during the colder months.

Visit the highest point in Otter Tail County, Inspiration Peak, or enjoy camping, fishing or hiking at Glendalough State Park. The 9,000-plus acres at the scenic Maplewood State Park is a popular attraction for swimming, boating, and fishing.

During the winter months, average daily temperatures in Ottertail hover around 11 degrees. Summer temperatures usually stay at 69 degrees, but seldom reach higher than 80 degrees. The area receives just under 27 inches of precipitation each year, with most of it received between April and September. Annual snowfall totals average 50 inches. Humidity levels are higher at night at 81 percent and then drop to 62 percent by mid-afternoon.
